Online Romance: How Does Ontario Prefer to Virtually Date?

By Jim Tomlin
Fact Checked by Thomas Leary

The Toronto Maple Leafs are out of the NHL playoffs early again, the Raptors are awaiting the NBA Draft and the Blue Jays are off to a slow start. It’s a rough time for Ontario sports fans, and those who bet on the home teams with Ontario sports betting operators.

It might be a good time for folks to find something else to do, no? Perhaps scroll their phones to find an online romance?

May 14 is Online Romance Day. So OntarioBets.com wanted to see which provinces had the strongest interest in online dating. Using Google Trends, we created a list of the top five provinces, based on search interest score of the term “online dating,” between April 25 and May 2, 2024. Then, we found the top five apps to find a virtual date in Ontario. Turn to OntarioBets for Ontario online casino apps reviews plus lifestyle and trend stories.

Ranking Ontario’s Online Dating Interest

The home of Ontario online casinos is also a province where folks seem to be searching for a new partner. Ontario ranked fourth among provinces with the most search interest in online dating apps, with a search interest score of 79. That ranks behind only Newfoundland and Labrador (search interest score of 100), British Columbia (91) and Alberta (85). Canada’s largest province rates ahead of all others, with Manitoba (77) rounding out the top five.

Ontario has a wide variety of places where one might turn a virtual date into a real meet-and-greet date. And if it all goes really well down the road, Niagara Falls has to be one of the most romantic places in the country to propose to your significant other.

If you’re both big baseball fans, a day at Rogers Centre for some MLB excitement might fit the bill. Check out our Toronto Blue Jays playoffs odds page here at BetOntario.com.

Hinge was the most-searched app among Ontario users searching for online romance with a search interest score of 41, beating out Tinder (35) and Bumble (34). Those three were well ahead of Plenty of Fish (13 search interest score) and Raya (8). According to businessofapps.com, Hinge markets itself as a place for people looking for more long-term relationships. The website also says dating apps generated worldwide revenue exceeding $5.3 billion USD in 2023.

Tinder and Hinge were launched around the same time, in 2012. Plenty of Fish is the oldest dating app on our list, having started its life as an app in 2010 (the name has been around even longer, since 2003).

Canadian government marriage statistics indicate that in 2020, the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, the divorce rate fell to its lowest level in Canada since 1973. So perhaps the algorithms powering these dating apps know something.

And if you don’t have any luck with virtual dating? You can find our reviews of Ontario sportsbook apps and hope that the Jays turn their season around to make your summer happier after all.
