This might be a surprise to some, but Canada is known around the world for the volume of high-calibre musicians coming out of the country.
The country has produced artists ranging from current sensations Drake – who is often spotted at Toronto Raptors games, sharing his enthusiasm for the team with many Ontario sports betting customers – and Justin Bieber, to older stars such as Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot and Joni Mitchell.
There are a bunch of reasons for that: Diversity of musical influences, including rock, pop, country, hip-hip, electronic; and even the level of support musicians receives from the Canadian government and the music industry at large.
The Canadian government provides funding for music education, festivals and live music events. That level of support helps Canadian musicians build their careers and gain exposure, both domestically and internationally.
So Canadian musicians, unlike other countries, in many ways get a running start. Record labels and music producers in Canada provide artists with resources and opportunities to develop their skills and build a fanbase as well.
Go down the list. Look at the Canadian talent that is dominating the charts these days – Drake, Justin Bieber, and The Weeknd. They’ve branched off from their Canadian roots and built massive followings on social media, which of course further promotes their music and increases reach.
With some of the world’s big music stars emerging from Canada, OntarioBets.com decided to take a break from reviewing Ontario casino apps and look at what songs are the most popular to ever come from homegrown talent.
OntarioBets.com used Wikipedia.com to create a point system in determining the best songs – awarding points for the following categories:
In this research, we used unique artists for the Top 10 songs to avoid having one or two artists dominate the chart.
No. 1 is “God’s Plan” by Drake (2018) with 54 points, followed by “Blinding Lights” by The Weeknd (2020) with 46 points, then “Love Yourself” by Justin Bieber (2015), also with 46 points.
Then – and we are dating ourselves here – “(Everything I Do) I Do It For You” by Bryan Adams in 1991, with 43 points, “Senorita” by Shawn Mendes (2019), with 43 points, “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen (2014), with 40 points, “Blurred Lines” by Robin Thicke (2013), with 39 points, and “Rude” by Magic! (2014), with 33 points.
No. 9 is “My Heart Will Go On”, by Celine Dion (1997), with 24 points, and finally “Scars To Your Beautiful” by Alessia Cara (2015) with 19 points.
