Canadian Beers vs. American Classics: International Beer Day

By Christopher Boan
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Canadians will quickly tell you that, when it comes to beer, there’s no comparing the stuff slung in the United States with those in the Great White North.

Now we have more to back up Canada’s argument.

International Beer Day is Aug. 2. At OntarioBets.com, we paused our Ontario casino apps reviews for a bit so we could compare the top 10 Canadian beers against the Top 10 American beers. Using RateBeer.com, we found the rating for the top 10 beers brewed in both countries and ranked them accordingly. Then, we found the average rating for those Canadian brews and their counterparts to the south.

How We Determined Our List

With worldwide juggernauts like Molson and Moosehead, strongly complemented by craft brewers such as Brasserie Dieu du Ciel! from Montreal and Collective Arts of Hamilton, Canada can certainly brag about its beer.

Overall, Canadian breweries scored higher totals on RateBeer.com than their U.S. peers, with an average score of 3.31 for the top 10 Canadian companies versus 2.40 for American suds. The exact phrases we used were “top best-selling American beers” and “top best-selling Canadian beers” in our search.

Much of that score was bolstered by Canada’s craft brewing scene. Hitmakers include brewers from the land of Ontario online casinos – names from Toronto and Hamilton joined a list of top-rated beers. The top 10 also includes brewers from Montreal, Chambly and Surrey, showcasing how wide-ranging Canada’s craft beer scene has spread.

Canada’s top beer, as determined by RateBeer.com, was Péché Mortel by Dieu de Ciel! out of Montreal. That brew (with a name that translates as “mortal sin” in English) has an average score of 4.17. The imperial stout packs quite the punch, with an ABV of 9.5% and a strong coffee taste.

The Montreal brewery beat out Collective Arts and its imperial stout named Origin of Darkness. It’s a barrel-aged imperial stout brewed with a variety of flavors, ranging from vanilla to pistachio, maple syrup and lactose. The Hamilton craft brewer’s alcohol-heavy imperial stout was No. 2 nationally with a score of 4.07.

In third place is Unibroue of Chambly, Quebec, whose Tripel style La Fin Du Monde beer had a 3.92 score to place third in Canada.

Toronto Brewer Represented in Top 10

The city where Toronto online casinos are available gives us the No. 4 beer on our list, Bellwoods Brewery Jelly King. That one has several variations including raspberry, plum and cherry sours; it rates at 3.85. Central City Brewers & Distillers out of Surrey, British Columbia, gives us the No. 5 selection, Red Racer IPA (3.83).

In the top 10 nationally, Unibroue was the only brewer to have multiple beers listed. The company also making the cut at No. 6 for the Maudite Dubbel style beer, which had a score of 3.82 overall.

Throw in Mill Street’s Imperial Chocolate stout (3.65), Moosehead’s Small Batch Cascadian Dark Lager (3.46), Alexander Keith’s Lunenburg Coffee & Cacao (3.28) and Steam Whistle Brewery’s Steam Whistle Pilsner (3.09) and you have the full rundown of the best beers – at least among those that met our search criteria – that Canada has to offer.
