With Christmas arriving in just under three weeks, it’s time to turn our collective attention forward toward the thought of spending quality time with friends and family.
In Canada, it seems that’s easier said than done in certain provinces.
At OntarioBets.com, where we’re generous with our Ontario online casino apps coverage, we wanted to see which provinces were the biggest grinches. Our list is based on search interest scores for “Christmas” and holiday,” and the amount of money spent on gifts by the provinces. We ranked the top 10 grinch provinces based on lowest search interest scores and least money spent on gifts. The Google Trends search was conducted between Nov. 3, 2024, and Dec. 3, 2024. Statisa.com was the source for how much money is spent on gifts.
Rank | Province | Avg. Rank |
1 | Quebec | 1 |
2 | New Brunswick | 4.5 |
T3 | Alberta | 5 |
T3 | Nova Scotia | 5 |
T5 | Saskatchewan | 5.5 |
T5 | British Columbia | 5.5 |
T5 | Prince Edward Island | 5.5 |
T8 | Ontario | 6 |
T8 | Newfoundland and Labrador | 6 |
10 | Manitoba | 7.5 |
Ontario finished fairly low on our list, as the home of legal, regulated Ontario online casinos seems to feel a fair bit of holiday spirit.
Places such as Manitoba and Newfoundland and Labrador also rank among Canada’s least grouchy provinces. On the other hand, French Canadian hotspots Quebec and New Brunswick ranked atop the country’s grinch list in 2024.
When broken down by grouchiness, it appears that no one in the Great White North holds a candle to Quebec. That was Canada’s most grinch-like province, rankings first across the board in the categories we measured.
New Brunswick’s score of 4.5 was second, while Alberta and Nova Scotia finished the period in question with an average ranking of five apiece, tying for third. Saskatchewan, British Columbia and Prince Edward Island were tied for fifth with average rankings of 5.5 apiece.
At the end of the day, it seems like Quebecois need an attitude adjustment, with the eastern province ranking as Canada’s grinchiest locale during 2024, ahead of the arrival of Christmas season in the Great White North.
