One of the Cinderella stories of the young NFL regular season has been the play of the Minnesota Vikings, who are 2-0 after pulling off an Ontario sports betting upset against the San Francisco 49ers in Minneapolis last weekend.
In that 23-17 victory over the defending NFC champs on Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium, Minnesota rode a 268-yard performance by journeyman quarterback Sam Darnold to upset the mighty Niners. San Francisco had entered the game as a 4-point favorite on BetMGM Ontario Sportsbook.
But after hosting the Houston Texans this Sunday, the Vikes will head on the road against the NFC North rival Green Bay Packers on Sept. 29. Even for the best teams, away games can be a challenge for NFL teams. At OntarioBets.com, we used Sports-Reference.com to find the records from the 2019-2023 seasons to see how the Vikings perform at away games during the first eight weeks of the season.
Total Wins | Total Losses | Winning % |
10 | 8 | .556 |
Bettors at Ontario sportsbook apps have one example to go on this season for Vikings road game trends.
The chart above does not account for Minnesota’s Week 1 performance this year. In that game, Darnold and the Vikings took care of business against the lowly New York Giants, winning 28-6 to illustrate a theme that’s emerged in the Land of 10,000 Lakes lately.
That theme is the solid play of Minnesota away from U.S. Bank Stadium, as the Vikings have gone 10-8 on the road in the first eight weeks of the regular season over the past half a decade, from 2019 to 2023. See our Minnesota Vikings betting guide for more information.
Since 2019, the Vikings have posted a .556 winning percentage between Weeks 1 and 8 on the road, speaking to the culture that head coach Kevin O’Connell has established in Minneapolis.
That culture was on display in the team’s 22-point Week 1 road win over New York, as the Vikings outgained the Giants, 312-240, and had three more first downs (17 to 14) than their opponents.
Looking forward, Minnesota has that home game against the Houston Texans on Sunday as the Vikings try to start 3-0 for the first time since 2016. See our Vikings vs. Texans odds page to compare operators and track line movement for that game.
After that, we’ll see how Minnesota’s trend on the road holds up at Green Bay’s Lambeau Field in Week 4. With the right mixture of good luck and good play, the Vikings will add to their win total away from the city of Minneapolis come the last Sunday of September.
While we don’t know how Minnesota will perform in that one, we do know that oddsmakers from bet365 Ontario Sportsbook have Minnesota as their No. 2 team on the NFC North odds board at +300 to win the division, behind the Detroit Lions at +100. Minnesota’s odds are ahead of the Packers (+375) and Chicago Bears (+650)
