Being the preseason favorite can be something of a curse, though; the Colorado Avalanche were favorites for most of 2023 but lost in the first round, and the Carolina Hurricanes were favored much of last season but fell short.

Do the Oilers Have a Chance to Win The Stanley Cup?

Yes indeed. According to the oddsmakers, the Oilers have the third-best chance Stanley Cup futures odds, at +800. It's a long, difficult road to a Lord Stanley's Cup, however, and favorites can turn into imposters in a hurry.

Key Contributors Toward Edmonton Oilers Playoff Chances

  • Connor McDavid - The NHL's most dynamic offensive player, he should play with extra motivation this season, coming off a Game 7 loss to the Florida Panthers in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Despite the loss to Florida, McDavid was the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the NHL playoffs MVP.
  • Leon Draisaitl - The league's seventh-leading scorer last season (106 points), Draisaitl recently signed a huge contract extension with the Oilers. If the Oilers are to win the Stanley Cup, he'll need to have another big season, and he is doing that, vaulting himself into the Hart Trophy consideration.
  • Stuart Skinner - The Oilers have had problems in net much of the recent past, but they got a strong playoff showing from Skinner and have high hopes he'll be even better in the regular season and beyond. Skinner is having an up-and-down season so far.
  • Evan Bouchard -The quarterback of the powerplay, Bouchard's numbers are down from last season, when he achieved a career-high, registering 82 points over 81 games. But Bouchard can still make a difference if he can start contributing down the stretch and helping McDavid and Draisaitl put points on the board.

Edmonton Oilers Strengths and Weaknesses

Strengths:

  • Top-2 Centers - In McDavid and Draisaitl, the Oilers have the most explosive 1-2 punch up the middle in the NHL. Either of them are a threat to score in every game.
  • Power Play - Not only are McDavid and Draisaitl on the top PP unit, but forward Zach Hyman is coming off a 54-goal season. Add in Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and defenseman Bouchard, and you have one very good power play. They are currently fifth on the powerplay this season.
  • Faceoffs/puck possession - The Oilers were fifth in the league last season in faceoff-winning percentage (53.2) and are currently sixth this season (51.6%). Getting the puck first is a key to scoring goals, especially in power-play situations.

Weaknesses:

  • Penalty killing - The Oilers were 15th in the NHL in killing penalties last season, at 79.5%, and it has gotten worse this season as the Oilers rank 21st on the penalty kill. Edmonton must improve on that mark if they wish to make a statement in the playoffs.
  • Defensive depth - Edmonton lost solid defenseman Philip Broberg to a predatory offer sheet from the Blues, which hurt a defense that already was a bit thin in their bottom three.
  • Is Skinner a true No. 1? - Stuart Skinner won 36 games last season and was strong in the playoffs. But his regular-season save percentage (.905) and goals-against average (.964) were modest. It has gotten worse this season, as he has an .894 save percentage. The Oilers will roll with Skinner with the idea that he can play at an elite level when they need him the most.

Where Can I Bet on the Oilers to Make the Playoffs?

In Ontario, a wide variety of sportsbooks are available to Canadian sports betting enthusiasts. Sportsbooks are also available in a handful of American states where you can place a futures bet on the Oilers.
