Ontario Population Growth Odds; Will These Cities Reach Impressive Growth Increases by 2030?

By Steve Bittenbender
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Home to nearly 15.3 million people, Ontario isn’t just Canada’s most populous province. It’s also one of the fastest-growing provinces in the country.

According to World Population Review, Ontario added more than 2.4 million people between 2011 and 2022. At 18.8%, Ontario had the fourth highest rate of growth among Canadian provinces, with only Alberta, Prince Edward Island and British Columbia posting higher percentages.

Much of the growth is taking place in Toronto – according to a National Post article in June, it is the fastest-growing city in either Canada or the United States. The home of the Argonauts, Blue Jays, Maple Leafs, Raptors and Toronto FC added more than 125,000 newcomers between July 2022 and July 2023.

However, it’s more than just Canada’s largest metropolis that’s growing. So OntarioBets.com – your home for Ontario sports betting news – developed odds to see if some of its other burgs will hit certain thresholds by 2030.

Kitchener, about 50 miles west of Toronto, is home to 257,635 people, up from 219,153 in 2011. The southern Ontario community is home to several historical spots and districts. That includes the Woodside National Historic Site, where Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King lived as a youth. King served three terms and was Canada’s longest-serving prime minister, leading the country from 1921-1926, 1926-1930 and 1935-1948.

Kitchener is also home to THEMUSEUM, which bills itself as an experiential museum that has hosted exhibits featuring items from the Rolling Stones’ private collection, artifacts from the Titanic and artwork created by (and inspired by) Andy Warhol.

London is roughly halfway between Toronto and the Detroit-Windsor region. It currently ranks as Ontario’s sixth-largest city, with a population of 413,887, an increase of about 13% since 2011.

One of the biggest employers in the city is CARFAX Canada. Five years ago, the company moved its headquarters to the old Kellogg’s cereal factory, which has been transformed into a 1-million-square-foot mixed-use development, with office space sitting next to bars, restaurants and other entertainment options. The district is also home to the Canadian Medical Hall of Fame, which honors nearly 150 medical pioneers from the country.

Barrie has not grown as much as other Ontario cities. Its 2024 population of 150,472 is about 10.6% higher than it was in 2011. However, the town 50 miles north of Toronto is expected to grow significantly through the rest of the decade.

Located on the western edge of Lake Simcoe, Barrie’s beaches are popular attractions during summer.

Woodstock is home to nearly 47,000 residents, but the city some 20 miles east of London is hitting a growth spurt. City leaders are currently trying to annex almost 400 hectares of land from Norwich Township, which they have said will help develop more commercial property in the community.

The city was the backdrop for a couple episodes of “Locke and Key,” a Netflix serial that ran for three seasons on the streaming service.
