Ontario Ranks As Most Cat-Obsessed Province

Canadian culture can’t get enough of cats, it seems.

The nation gave us the TV series “Catwalk: Tales From the Cat Show Circuit” as well as “Kitty Cats,” a French-language production aimed at children that featured puppet animal characters including two cats.

International Cat Day is Aug. 8. To mark the occasion, OntarioBets.com took a break from covering Ontario sportsbooks to find out which provinces love cats the most. We used search interest scores from Google Trends to rank provinces by combined searches for the phrases “cat cafes,” “cat adoptions,” and “cat breeds” in our research. The searches were done from July 15 to July 22, 2024.

Ontario Is The Cat’s Meow

Among all of Canada’s provinces, Ontario came out on top for the cat-related searches that we looked into.

Canada’s most populated province had 216 points from all of our searches combined, edging Alberta (204 points). Our top five list spans the whole country, as British Columbia (196 points), Manitoba (154) and New Brunswick (100) are included.

According to the Ontario SPCA website (the acronym stands for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals), in 2023 the organization found homes for 2,617 cats, out of 4,041 total animals that found new homes.

The province’s SPCA has a “Working Cat Program” for animals that are suited to be outdoor animals. The site points out that these are “former street cats who are used to outdoor life … are not typical indoor pets and have no desire to be lap cats.” But such cats can help with such issues as keeping vermin populations under control.

Canada’s Most Popular Cat Breeds

Rover.com, which places an emphasis on pet care, listed the most popular cat breeds in Canada for 2023. Three somewhat related breeds came out on top: Domestic Shorthair, American Shorthair and Domestic Longhair. Ragdoll and Siamese rounded out the top five.

The site points out that Domestic Shorthairs are somewhat of a “mutt” breed with “a variety of physical attributes.”
