Which Canadian Province Is The Most Charitable?

By Christopher Boan
Fact Checked by Jim Tomlin

Few aspects of Canadian life are more front and center than enacting the Golden Rule. Natives of the Great White North have a reputation for treating their countrymen with respect on a near daily basis.

Still, some provinces do a better job of helping those in need than others when it comes to donating toward Canadian charities.

International Charity Day is Sept. 5. In the spirit of giving, OntarioBets.com took a break from reviewing the best Ontario Ontario online casinos because we wanted to see which provinces were the most charitable. We pulled data from Statistics Canada to see what each province’s ratio of total donations over total income is and found search interest scores for “charities to donate to,” on Google Trends between August 19, 2004 and August 19, 2024. We ranked the top 5 most charitable Canadian provinces based on a total score, factoring in both the search interest scores and total donations over total income.

Where Ontario Ranks When It Comes To Charity

Canada’s most populous province, where Ontario sportsbooks are legal and regulated, proved to be the most charitable of them all. That conclusion is based on the metrics used for this story.

Across the country, Ontario’s total score of 100.8 makes the province the most giving to Canadian charities. That score beat out Alberta (71.9 total score), British Columbia (71.8), Manitoba (65.0) and Saskatchewan (64.7) on the Canadian charity leaderboard.

Based on the digital tea leaves that are search interest totals, it seems like residents of Ontario, from the western fringes of Thunder Bay east toward the Quebec border, are doing their part to help those in need.

When it comes to that Golden Rule, there’s no denying that Canada’s most populous province is doing its share to lend a helping hand, with Ontario residents doing for others what they’d like to see done for them.
