This month, we have visited the topic of Ontario’s favourite Christmas movies. But if there is anything more popular at this time of year than those films, it might be Christmas music.
Whether it’s old standards or newer tunes, the annual glut of holiday-themed sings reaches a peak in the week or so before Christmas.
At OntarioBets.com, we were curious which Christmas songs were most loved by locals. Using Google Trends, we found the top five most popular Christmas songs, based on search interest scores from a timeframe of Dec. 17, 2004 to Dec. 17, 2024.

Best-Selling Single Ever Tops Our Chart
A couple of modern Christmas songs make our list (more on them later) but the No. 1 ranking belongs to a song that was popular when the National Hockey League had “The Original Six” and legal Ontario sports betting was decades away.
Bing Crosby’s “White Christmas” takes the top spot with a search interest of 21 during the 20-year span that we studied. The song has been covered numerous times, but when most folks think of this classic, they probably still think of Crosby’s version.
His “White Christmas” was recorded for the 1942 movie “Holiday Inn” which starred Crosby and Fred Astaire. It has gone on to be not only the most popular Christmas song ever, but the best-selling single of all time, according to the Guinness Book of World Records, with 50 million copies of the single sold.

Ontario Likes Modern Christmas Songs Too
While Ontario residents ponder whether they prefer a real or artificial Christmas tree, they are also listening to more contemporary holiday tunes.
The second song on our list is “All I Want For Christmas” by Mariah Carey, with a search interest score of 12. As of Dec. 18, the song is No. 1 on the Billboard magazine Hot 100 chart, which tracks the top U.S. singles, for the second straight week. It has climbed back to the top of the Hot 100 every December since 2019, making it the only song ever with six separate chart runs at No. 1.
In third place on our list is the 1984 Wham! single, “Last Christmas” (11 search interest). The late George Michael’s plaintive song about being rejected during the holidays has resonated for four decades.
