Ontario Locals Among Most Likely To Be Proposed To This Engagement Season

By Jim Tomlin

Winter is when much of Canada, including the home province of Ontario online casinos, freezes over. Ponds become frozen (and turn into ice skating and hockey rinks), folks stay indoors more and snowplows do a lot of work.

And one more thing happens in winter: Thoughts turn to future marriage partners.

From November through Valentine’s Day is a span where, according to one estimate, around 40% of all marriage proposals happen. At OntarioBets.com, we wanted to see which provinces are most likely to have people pop the question during this engagement season. Using Google Trends, we combined the search interest scores for “engagement ring” and “proposal ideas." The search period we studied was a 30-day period ending on Nov. 20, 2024. The rankings are based on combined search interest scores.

Ontario Leads The Pack In Canada

This data is exclusive to OntarioBets.com, where we review Ontario casino apps and offer slices of life outside our usual coverage of the sports and gambling realms.

A recent WeddingWire Newlywed Report indicated that at least four out of 10 marriage proposals take place during the winter holiday season. And the most Canadian interest in engagement-related search terms happens in Ontario, according to our research.

Ontario scored 151 points in searching Google for the terms for “engagement ring” and “proposal ideas" over the 30-day span we studied. Canada’s largest province edged Nova Scotia (144 points) and British Columbia (142) for the top spot.

About The Canadian Diamond Industry

Of course, when you’re talking engagement rings, the first thing most folks think of is a diamond.

The International Gem Society has a web page devoted to shopping for Canadian diamonds. The gemsociety.org site says that diamonds were only discovered in Canada in 1991, but that the nation has risen to third in the world in producing diamonds, behind Russia and Botswana.

Canadian diamonds are expensive (well, no real diamonds are cheap) but the IGS site touts some advantages, mainly that Canadian diamonds are “ethically and responsibly sourced” and that they’re high quality. Diamonds from The Great White North are often sent to other countries for cutting and polishing.

According to the World Population Review website, the average cost for an engagement ring in Canada is between $2,400 and $4,000 in U.S. dollars (the website expresses all figures in USD for an even comparison). That’s not cheap – but it’s less than Canada’s southern neighbor. The United States has the highest average rate for engagement rings in the world, at between $5,000 and $7,000 (tied with Hong Kong).
