Ontario’s Most Searched Terms In 2023

One of the top news stories in 2023, among customers at Ontario sportsbooks, sports fans and pop culture mavens, has been the romance between pop superstar Taylor Swift and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce.

That story jumped to another level over the weekend with rumors of a ring and a request for permission from Swift’s father for her hand in marriage. Swift has attended many Chiefs games this season, causing a media and social media uproar each time.

Is it a sports story? It’s debatable whether all the hoopla has had an impact on Kelce’s play. Kelce has 85 receptions for 924 yards and five touchdowns in 2023 so, at age 34, he is still one of the league’s most productive tight ends. And the Chiefs, defending Super Bowl champs, are once again in the championship conversation, with Kelce a big part of that.

Taylor Swift Searches Hot, But Not No. 1

So it’s not a surprise that “Taylor Swift” has been one of the most searched terms in Ontario. But unlike many of her hit singles — and her hugely successful concert film this year — she is not at No. 1 on this list.

You won’t find these items at Ontario sports betting apps, only here at OntarioBets.com.

In terms of the biggest percentage increases for Google searches in Ontario, “Taylor Swift” rose 190% to rank sixth on our list. Ahead of her in the rankings was “ChapGPT”, which was up 2,450%, then “IPL 2023” (up 1,150%), “Al Nassr” (up 550%), “John Wick 4” (up 350%), then “Israel” (up 200%). Al Nassr is the Saudi Arabian soccer club where superstar Cristiano Ronaldo now plays.

There are many other reasons, of course, why people would search Swift, other than her relationship with Kelce. She’s a multi-Grammy award-winning singer/songwriter, a global superstar, and a billionaire.

But that relationship has taken over the NFL and is a rare bridge between the top of the entertainment and pro sports universes. All Swift had to do was attend a Chiefs game in October and national television ratings were smashed — not to mention that, as of Dec. 18, the Chiefs have +650 odds with NorthStar Bets Ontario Sportsbook to repeat as NFL champions.

Other Ontario Search Terms Drawing Interest

After “Taylor Swift”, No. 7 in the rankings was “eConestoga” (up 70%). Then there was a four-way tie for the eighth spot, with all of these up 60%, involving “IPL,” “My Benefits,” “Apne TV” and “Quillbot.” There’s of course a much more serious narrative behind the popularity of “Israel” in Canadians’ search tendencies, with the war in Gaza in its second month.

“John Wick 4” was the fourth movie in the popular Keanu Reeves movie series, which grossed over $440 million at the box office.
