As more is known about the negative consequences that come from long-term drinking, more and more Canadians are opting to steer clear of the sauce and engage in sober living instead.
Few places in the Great White North have shown more interest in sober living than the country’s most populous province, which is home to Ontario sports betting and iGaming.
Among Millennials and Gen Z, there is a growing “sober-curious” lifestyle movement. Sober-curious is not a full commitment to not drinking alcohol, but exploring activities without the influence of alcohol to gauge how the individual feels. This less restrictive, more explorative lifestyle eases people into sober living.
OntarioBets.com took a break from reviewing Ontario casino apps to find out which provinces were the most sober-curious in Canada. We used Google Trends to see which provinces were searching “mocktails” most often from June 14-21, 2024. We ranked the provinces based on search interest score, compared to other topics. We also ranked the five most sober-curious cities in Ontario.
Rank | Province | Search Interest Score |
1 | British Columbia | 100 |
2 | Ontario | 89 |
3 | Alberta | 82 |
4 | Manitoba | 70 |
5 | Saskatchewan | 62 |
Of the country’s many provinces, Ontario had the second highest search interest score when it came to topics surrounding sober living. We measured a search interest of 89 for Ontario, second only to British Columbia’s sum of 100.
The province where you’ll find Ontario sportsbook apps ranked ahead of Alberta (82 search interest score), Manitoba (70) and Saskatchewan (62) in our top five, underscoring just how many people in the province are seeking ways to have fun without alcohol.
As far as individual cities in Ontario were concerned, Waterloo had the highest search interest score surrounding sober living, with a total search interest score of 100. That beating out other locales in the province, such as Kingston (73), Burlington (65), Ottawa (46) and Hamilton (39).
As more and more Canadians are opting to steer clear of vices that previous generations in the country embraced wholeheartedly, the demand for sober living options will only increase. Many young Ontario residents are at the forefront of that ongoing lifestyle change in the country.
