The records keep falling for Ontario online casino wagering. We can zoom in on that performance now that iGaming Ontario – which administers casino, sports and poker betting in Canada’s largest province – reports numbers broken down by month rather than just quarterly.
For December, the combined amount wagered across all platforms was $7.817 billion, a 5% increase from November’s $7.457 billion, re-setting the high mark.
Here’s a snapshot of the combined handle and revenue in a month-over-month comparison:
December vs. November Ontario Wagering
| Total handle | Total revenue |
December | $7.817B | $269.3M |
November | $7.457B | $290.9M |
Change | Up 5% | Down 7% |
The handle, or amount wagered, at Ontario casino apps was $6.535 billion in December, up 7% from November ($6.135 billion) and setting a record, which had been $6.254 billion from October.
Sports betting is lumped together with esports, proposition, novelty and exchange betting into one general “betting” category in the province. That handle decreased 4%, from a record from $1.187 billion for November to $1.141 billion in the final month of 2024.
December peer-to-peer poker handle was $141 million, up 4% from November ($135 million), a according to an iGaming Ontario report filed in January.
Ontario Revenue Down Slightly in December
December’s total combined betting revenue for casino, sports and poker wagering was $269.3 million, down 7% from November’s record $290.9 million.
However, the casino revenue hit a new high mark at $224.4 million for December, up 8% from $207.3 million in the previous month. The record had been $212,2 million, set in October.
Online revenue derived from Ontario sportsbooks fell hard, off 50% from November’s record $78.5 million to $39.3 million. Peer-to-peer poker revenue rose 10% in a month-over-month comparison, from $5.1 million to $5.6 million.
Quarterly Numbers Also Set Records
Until now, Ontario had only reported numbers for each quarter. October to December marked Q3 of the 2024-25 fiscal year, which begins in April and ends in March.
Considering that the cumulative betting for all varieties (poker, casino and sports combined) has set records in each of the past four months, it should come as no surprise that the third quarter of the 2024-25 fiscal year easily surpassed all records for Ontario wagering.
The Q3 handle was $22.7 billion, up 22% from $18.7 billion in the second quarter (July to September). Revenue increased 11.9% in a quarter-over-quarter comparison, from $738 million in Q2 to $825.8 million for the span from October to December.
Here is a summary:
Q3 Vs. Q2 Handle And Revenue For Ontario Betting
Quarter | Total handle | Revenue |
Q3 (October to December 2024) | $22.7B | $825.8M |
Q2 (July to September 2024) | $18.7B | $738M |
