Some of the biggest names in men’s tennis, led by Wimbledon champ and world No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz, are coming to Toronto for the National Bank Open tournament. And the ATP event, with the main draw starting on Monday, has a new deal with a major Ontario sports betting apps operator.
Betway announced that it has added the National Bank Open to its portfolio of global tennis sponsorships, becoming the official betting partner of the competition on the heels of a multi-year deal.
This year’s edition of the ATP Masters 1000 tournament takes place between Aug. 5-13 at the Sobeys Stadium in Toronto with the 10,800-capacity Centre Court hosting the final.
Growing List of Ontario Sports Betting Sponsorships
Sponsorship partnerships between sportsbook operators and sports teams, leagues and events have been announced with regularity since the fully regulated, legal Ontario online casinos and sports wagering market launched in April 2022. The agreement with Betway Sportsbook Ontario is the latest.
With the deal, Betway will have high-profile courtside visibility on the backwall around the Sobeys Stadium complex during the tournament.
Alcaraz, who beat Novak Djokovic in a historic Wimbledon final on July 16, will be playing in Toronto for the first time. Djokovic will miss the Toronto tour stop.
Other top men’s names in next week’s tournament include No. 3-ranked Daniil Medvedev, No. 4 Casper Ruud, No. 5 Stefanos Tsitsipas and No. 6 Holger Rune, as well as Canada’s own Felix Auger-Aliassime (pictured above), who is ranked No. 12. The draw will be held later Friday. Qualifying runs through Sunday, starting at 11 a.m. The doubles final is Aug. 13 at 1:30 p.m., followed by the singles final, not before 4 p.m.
Betway Group Reaction To Deal
Anthony Werkman, the CEO of Betway Group – which also offers the Betway online casino Ontario option for iGaming – issued a statement about his company’s agreement with the Toronto tennis tournament.
“Adding to our enviable portfolio of tennis sponsorships globally, we’re delighted to welcome the National Bank Open to the Betway family,” Werkman said. “This competition is steeped in history and is a firm favourite for tennis fans, so we’re obviously very excited to be a partner as we continue to be known as the number one betting brand within tennis.”
Betway has deals with 12 tournaments globally on the ATP Tour, including the Miami Open, Rio Open and Hamburg European Open. The Super Group-owned brand also is connected to other sports and teams, including in the Premier League, La Liga, cricket, and in the NBA and NHL in the U.S. market.
