It sure looks like the Toronto Maple Leafs are at risk of losing one of the team’s depth pieces on the blue line, as veteran defenseman T.J. Brodie appears set to his free agency this offseason.

The 34-year-old Chatham native has played in 908 NHL games, scoring 56 goals with 292 assists and a +84 rating, accumulating 64.8 point shares during that time with the Calgary Flames and Maple Leafs.

In his four-year run in Ontario, Brodie amassed a +70 rating in 274 games, illustrating his value on defense for a team on the precipice of breaking through under the leadership of head coach Sean Keefe.

OntarioBets.com, using our Ontario sports betting mindset, wanted to see where Brodie would land for the 2024-25 NHL season, so we developed hypothetical odds to see where Brodie will be, as few believe he will end up staying in Toronto.

Who Signs Brodie This Offseason?

While the Maple Leafs (and the field) are listed as the top spot for Brodie to land this offseason, at +200, the best contender to land the veteran blue liner is the Los Angeles Kings, who are listed at +500.

With the 34-year-old exiting a four-year deal with the Leafs that paid him $5 million annually, it’ll likely take at least that much to land the veteran this offseason, which could be difficult for Toronto given their cap commitments for 2024 and beyond.

That’s why we see outsiders like the Kings, Carolina Hurricanes, and Washington Capitals (+550 each) being the top contenders to sign Brodie this offseason, with longshot contenders the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators coming in at +700 to cap off our odds board for the moment.

Whichever club signs Brodie is getting their mitts on a player that can anchor a blue line with the best of them, with over 900 games of experience under his belt and more than a decade in the league to help guide a youthful team forward in 2024 and beyond.

That leadership skillset is one of the main reasons why we see NHL clubs lining up to land Brodie once the NHL’s UFA market starts next month, with franchises looking to land a locker room presence that veteran players like the Chatham native can offer in spades. You can expect whichever team Brodie ends up on, operators like Caesars Ontario Sportsbook will adjust their odds accordingly.
