There are exciting plans to dramatically reshape the Niagara Falls skyline and offer a new landmark hotel and casino in the city. The proposed redevelopment of the Oakes Hotel was finally approved by the city council in early October. When completed, the construction will mark the largest development in Niagara Falls in decades.
A New Landmark Destination
Standing at nearly 60 storeys, the new hotel and casino complex will be the tallest in the city and a contender for the tallest hotel in the country. It will be located at the very heart of the tourist district where the historic Oakes Hotel currently stands. The Oakes Hotel is also one of the closest hotels to Horseshoe Falls, the largest of the three waterfalls that form Niagara Falls.
The new construction will host 1,140 hotel suites in addition to 126 residential units. The casino is set to be located on the second floor of the building, though specific details regarding the casino size have yet to be released. A new restaurant will also be located on-site.

Game-Changing Casino Creates Jobs and Adds Competition
This new resort casino facility, located in a prime location in Niagara Falls, will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the city’s gaming industry. Fallsview Casino and Casino Niagara have dominated the downtown Niagara market for the past couple of decades. Introducing new competition in the centre of the tourist district will bring a dynamic shift to the local gaming landscape.
Niagara Falls Council expects the new hotel to attract millions of dollars in investment and create over 2,500 full-time and part-time jobs. The project was approved unanimously by the Niagara Falls Council in early October. City Hall was largely excited about the development. Mayor Jim Diodati described the project as “the nicest, newest jewel in the crown of Niagara Falls” while councillor Patel saw the project as a “game-changer” for the tourist industry and skyline.

When Will the Casino at The Oakes Hotel Open?
The construction timeline at Oakes Hotel has yet to be finalized. It was noted, however, that demolition of the current site would not begin until the developer was ready to begin construction. There are hopes this will start in the next year or so.
