The chances keep growing for Ontario online poker players and in-person participants to compete at this year’s World Series of Poker.
The Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto will host its first WSOP Circuit event via GGPoker from March 22 to April 1. Great Canadian Entertainment (GCE), which runs the casino, made the announcement on Monday.
According to a GCE company release, the WSOP Circuit event in Toronto will include eight Circuit Ring events, with $3.9 million CDN in estimated prize pools, including a $2,000 Main Event. There also will be a $3,500 High Roller event boasting a prize pool of more than $850,000, the company said.
This year’s World Series of Poker main event is once again in Las Vegas from July 3-17 and players at Ontario online casinos have numerous opportunities to try to qualify. GGPoker is operating the online events in Canada.
“We are thrilled to collaborate with GGPoker to bring the World Series of Poker to Toronto for the first time,” Robert Katsavelos, the general manager of the casino, said in the release. “This is a fitting milestone that will create further momentum for our recently opened 30-table poker room at Great Canadian Toronto, Canada’s newest and largest casino resort. We are excited to welcome tournament participants from across the North American poker community and from right here in the City of Toronto and are certain that this event is going to be a huge success.”
The World Series of Poker is the biggest event in poker, with a record $12 million USD going to last year’s winner, Daniel Weinman of Atlanta. The most recent Canadian to win it all in the WSOP Main Event was Jonathan Duhamel in 2010.
The Great Canadian Casino Resort Toronto is just northeast of Pearson International Airport, at Woodbine Racetrack.
Daniel Negreanu: Toronto WSOP Event ‘Quite Special’
Canadian poker star Daniel Negreanu, a GGPoker global brand ambassador, expressed enthusiasm for this year’s Circuit event in Toronto.
“I have been playing WSOP events around the world for over 25 years,” Negreanu said in the release. “There is something quite special about being able to finally compete in one in my hometown.”
